In the wake of September 11th, there were a lot of different projects and charities sprouting up with lots of laudable goals and exciting ideas. What to do with the site of the World Trade Center attack, how to commemorate the victims, and how to take care of injured or sick service workers were just a few of the important questions these organizations were trying to answer.

One of the most interesting projects to happen in the aftermath of September 11th was the 9/11 Memorial Quilt. This was a big project with lots of people and work involved. The idea was that groups of schoolchildren, policemen, firefighters, and churches would each decorate and dedicate a king-sized white blanket to a particular victim of the September 11th attacks. When over 2000 of these quilt pieces were completed, they would be sewn together into a massive quilt which organizer Kevin Held says would span twenty-five football fields.

The 9/11 Memorial Quilt project was conceived of by Kevin Held, who was not a non-profit organizer or firefighter or anything prior to the incident. Held was just a concerned American who had a good idea for a project and wanted to see that idea come to fruition.
